Ultimate Frisbee In 10 Rules
-
Ultimate is played with no referees and therefore the players are responsible for the course of the game. Fair play is therefore hugely important.
- Ultimate is played with two teams of seven players each with one disc or five players on an indoor or beach surface.
- The game starts with a Pull. Both teams stand on their end zone line, the team that last scored the last point throws the disc. The other team gains possession of the disc where it lands and then becomes the offensive team.
- A point is scored when the offensive team catches the disc in the end zone of the defense team.
- A disc is inbounds when caught within the field of play, end zone lines and side lines are out! If a player catches the disc but lands on a side line they are out and possesion changes over.
- A player in possession of the disc can play it in any direction, he has 10 seconds (8 indoors) to release the disc. A defender will stand within three meters of him and count to 10. They are not allowed to move while in possession of the disc.
- The defensive team gets possession of the disc when an offensive players throw is incomplete, intercepted or goes out of bounds. When this happens the defensive team then becomes the offensive team.
- After each score a team can substitute as many players as they like.
- Ultimate frisbee is a non contact sport and physical contact is not allowed.
- When a foul (physical contact that affects a throw or catch) occurs a player will calls "FOUL". All players stand where they were when the call was made and play is stopped. The intention is to carry on as if the foul had not occured. When players can't agree the disc is returned to the last thrower.
This is a very short list of the rules to give you a basic understanding of the sport and give you a starting chance if you decide to play. All clubs should be able to help you and explain any rules that you aren't clear on, all you need to do is ask.
